Mélanie focuses her practice on public law and litigation. She has a keen interest in Aboriginal, constitutional, human rights and minority language rights law.

Mélanie assists and advises Aboriginal clients on a wide variety of matters, including the duty to consult, Aboriginal rights and title advocacy and litigation, and language and cultural rights. She advocates on behalf of Aboriginal clients in communications with government and industry proponents. Mélanie has also gained particular experience negotiating and drafting impact benefit agreements in relation to proposed developments in the mining, energy, aquaculture and tourism industries.

Mélanie further assists and advises educational institutions, including school boards across Canada, with respect to federal-provincial funding agreements and minority-language education protected by Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Mélanie practices in both French and English. She is conversant in Spanish and continues to study and improve her Spanish-language skills.

Before Power Law
  • Mélanie previously articled and practiced in the corporate commercial group of a leading western Canadian regional firm.

  • During law school, Mélanie conducted research regarding access to justice for linguistic minorities in Canada with the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario and with the Language Rights Support Program. She also held various roles within the Regroupement des étudiants de common law en français.

  • During her studies, Mélanie participated in two exchange programs, most recently in at the Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas in Paris, France, and previously at the Pontifica Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima, Perú.
